English Speakers of Other Languages

Sunnynook Primary School operates a very successful English Programme for children for whom English is their second language.The programme caters for students from over 17 different nationalities.

The programme is taught by Mrs Rhonwen Dewar and Mrs Val Kay who are skilled and experienced teachers for ESOL children. Over 90 children at Sunnynook are in the ESOL programme. The children go to ESOL lessons in Room 20 for 30 minute sessions for four days of the week. The sessions are held during class time with groups of only eight children.

ESOL support is also provided in the classroom through the individualised computer programme offered by our school called "IMAGINE LEARNING". This programme is new to New Zealand and we are very pleased with its results.
