Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou Parents / Caregivers / Sunnynook Whānau,
Honoring the Passing of the Māori King, Kīngi Tuheitia: A Time for Reflection and Respect
Our school community joins together to recognise the recent passing of Kīngi Tuheitia, a significant figure in New Zealand's cultural and spiritual landscape. Kīngi Tuheitia is a symbol of unity for the Māori people, and he has played a vital role in preserving and promoting the traditions, language, and values of the Māori culture. His passing marks a poignant moment in our nation's history, reminding us all of the importance of cultural heritage and respect for those who lead and inspire.
At our school, we are taking this opportunity to reflect on the significance of Kīngi Tuheitia’s leadership and the rich traditions of the Māori people. We encourage our students to learn more about the Māori monarchy and the values it represents—such as kotahitanga (unity), whanaungatanga (kinship), manaakitanga (hospitality), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship). These values are deeply intertwined with the principles of respect, community, and caring for one another.
Kīngi Tuheitia's legacy will continue to inspire us to honour and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of our nation, and as a mark of respect to his mana, our flag has been flown at half-mast today. Kīngi Tuheitia’s impact on our nation will not be forgotten, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his whānau and all those who mourn his loss.

Ngā mihi
Virginia
