1. Create a Reading Routine

• Set a consistent reading time: Designate a specific time each day (even 15–30 minutes) for independent or family reading. This helps build a habit.
• Make it enjoyable: Choose a time when your child is relaxed, like before bed, or when you’re winding down for the day.
• Set expectations: When your child(ren) wakes up, set the expectation that they lie in bed with a book before getting up. (Helpful for more sleep for parents too!)
• Limit screen time: Encourage more time for reading by setting limits on screen time (TV, tablets, etc.).
• Give the gift of books: Each Christmas, give your child a new book to read over summer. (My boys love getting ‘Guiness book of World records’ each year along with chapter books!)
  
  

2. Read Together

• Read aloud as a family: Take turns reading books aloud. If your child is older, encourage them to read to you, while you listen and discuss the story.
• Shared reading experiences: Choose books you both enjoy and discuss the themes, characters, and plots to make reading more interactive.
• Book to movie: Read a book with your child that has been made into a movie then once the book is finished have a movie afternoon and you can discuss the similarities between the book and the movie. (‘Holes’ is great for this with our Yr 5/6 students)
  
  

3. Offer a Variety of Books

• Match books to interests: Choose books that align with your child’s personal interests. If they love dinosaurs, space, or fantasy, there are plenty of engaging books in those genres.
• Balance fiction and nonfiction: Include a mix of storybooks, informational texts, and even graphic novels to appeal to different tastes.
• Explore different formats: Comics, graphic novels, or audiobooks can also be a great way to engage kids, especially if they’re hesitant about traditional books.

• Library summer programs: Many libraries offer summer reading programs with fun activities and rewards for reading goals. Sign your child up and participate together.
• Allow independent choices: Let your child pick out books themselves at the library, which gives them a sense of ownership over their reading.
• Attend library events: Many libraries also offer events like story times, reading challenges, or author talks that can motivate kids to read.
  
  

5. Set Reading Goals and Track Progress

• Create a reading chart: Track the number of books read or set specific page goals. Reward progress with small incentives to motivate your child.
• Celebrate milestones: Celebrate when they finish a book or reach a goal, perhaps with a special activity or a small treat.
  
  

6. Incorporate Reading Into Daily Life

• Reading for real-world purposes: Encourage your child to read menus, recipes, or instructions together. Reading isn’t just for school—showing how it’s part of everyday life can make it feel more important.
• Involve them in reading-related tasks: Have your child help you read signs while out and about, or read labels when grocery shopping.
  
  

7. Make Use of Audiobooks and Podcasts

• Audiobooks: Let your child listen to audiobooks during car rides or while they’re doing other activities like drawing or playing. Audiobooks can improve listening skills and help them engage with more complex material.
• Podcasts: For older kids, podcasts can be a fun way to hear stories, learn new things, or even explore book discussions.
  
  

8. Model Reading Behavior

• Be a reading role model: Children are more likely to read if they see their parents reading. Make time for your own reading and share what you’re reading with your child.
• Discuss books: Talk about the books you’re reading, share what you’ve learned, or ask about your child’s books. This shows that reading is a valuable and enjoyable activity for all ages.
