Whakawhanaungatanga, means the forming of relationships and creating unity in a community, and in the spirit of this, we have had some exciting events happening at school over the last fortnight.
Last Tuesday it was wonderful to welcome local Principals from our Pupuke Kahui Ako (Community of Learning) to our school. Our guest speakers were Te Ringakaha Tia-Ward and Puata’ata Tia-Ward, authors of ‘Te Whare Tapu o te Ngākau Maori’. This book is a treasure to have and explains all the protocols you need to know on a Marae. A big thank you to Matua Darius and our super-prepared Kapa Haka for welcoming our Manuhuri.
On Monday at Assembly our 2023 Student Leaders were presented with their Student Leader badges. It was lovely to see extended whanau also at the presentation. I am looking forward to working with them over the year.
Over the weekend we had a school campout, whereby families could camp on our field and get to know new families in the school. It is all about connections, engagement and fun. Thank you to our PTA for organising this, the children loved it!

Introducing Your 2023 Student Leaders
The student leaders have written information about themselves. These will be included over the coming newsletters.
Hayden Fish: Hello my name is Hayden and I am a student leader for 2023. I have been here since I was five years old, it's been a great but long five years and to be a student leader is so great.
I wanted to be a student leader because I’ve been at this school for a long time and I want to give something back. I have lots of qualities like patience, kindness and gratitude. I would like to go back and reflect on lots of stuff like the events, friends and accomplishments. I also have 1 other job, I am a peer mediator. It is so great at Sunnynook there have been many great opportunities and I would suggest this school to everyone and anyone.
I am looking forward for this year.
Thanks
Hayden Fish

Teddy Bear Picnic
Nga Kowhai
Room 16
Aryul - I loved bringing my teddy to school for a picnic! Mia - My family had a picnic with me and my teddies. It was so much fun!
Kaden - I want to have a picnic with my teddy everyday!
Aaron and William - We had yummy food and could play everywhere on the field! I read a story to my teddy bear in class and had a picnic. What a great day!
Room 9 In Room 9 we had lots of fun painting teddy bears. We used a fork to spread the paint to make it look like fur. We added eyes, a nose, a mouth and a bow tie. We think our teddy bears look very smart!
Table Tennis Table
Thank you
A thank-you to the following Dad's who volunteered their time after-school this week to help Mr Mark erect the very heavy table tennis table which was funded from some of the profits of last years 'Colour Run'.
Brendon Hosken: Nate's (Room 5's) Dad
Steve Munro: Ava's (Room 9) Dad
John Greenwood: Jack's (Rm 1) Dad
Ben Morris: Ava's (Room 7) Dad
It was great to have a mixture of Dad's who now only have their youngest children at Sunnynook with newer Sunnynook Dad's. Volunteering in any way that you can is a great way to give back to the school community. The very next day saw children lining up to play. Ngā mihi nui Steve, Brendon, John and Ben.

Picking up Your Child After School We have received several complaints from our neighbours in regards to cars parking across or in driveways from caregivers picking their children up from school. PLEASE be considerate of our neighbours and only park in legal areas, so that the residents can freely access their homes. This is also for the safety of our children. We have been informed that the police will be notified in the future if any cars are parked illegally.

Are you and your whānau protected from measles?
Information from the Ministry of Health
With people travelling overseas again, there’s a risk that someone with measles could unknowingly bring the disease back to Aotearoa.
Measles spreads easily and quickly, usually between people who are unimmunised or only partially immunised. It can be serious and life threatening. In the 2019 measles outbreak in Aotearoa more than 30% of the people infected had to be admitted to hospital.
The best protection against measles is the free MMR vaccine. It will protect you and your whānau, and prevent the virus from spreading.
You will be protected against measles if you:
• had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine
• had measles before
• were born before 1 Jan 1969.
If you’re unsure if you or your tamariki have had any or both doses of the MMR vaccine, check by calling your GP or hauora provider. Alternatively, check your Plunket Well Child Tamariki Ora book. If you’re still not sure, be safe and get immunised – there are no safety concerns with having an extra dose. MMR vaccines are free at your local health provider and many pharmacies.
As measles still occurs in many countries, if you’re travelling overseas these holidays it’s especially important to be immunised to prevent the risk of being unknowingly infected and causing an outbreak in Aotearoa on your return.
More information about the measles vaccination can be found here:
Please send your child's up-to-date Vaccination Certificate to: reception@sunnynookschool.nz
Road Patrol Parent Volunteers
We need your help!
We are currently seeking the support of an adult volunteer to help supervise the road crossing on Tonkin Drive weekly on Thursday mornings from 8:15-8:45am. If you are able to volunteer please contact Rebeccah Bassett-Smith. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Students completed a successful training session with Constable Louise on Tuesday 28 February.
Written By Max W in Room 6: On the 28th of February, About 20 kids including me went to have some road patrol training. We have road patrol so people can be safe when walking across the road at the crossing on Tonkin Dr. We had a briefing before we went down to the crossing from Constable Louise. She told us how we can be safe during road patrol. Then we walked down to the crossing and had some training time. We learned all the signals during crossing (Signs out, check, clear, cross now, signs in) and had some practicing on the cross with the lollipop signs. We had the other people waiting for their turn on the lollipop signs to cross the road while the people with the signs did all the signals and actions. In the end, I think we all did a great job in the training.

School Hats
For Sun Protection
In Terms 1 and 4, your child needs to wear a hat at school when they are outside. During these months, the New Zealand sun is very strong, and the wearing of hats together with the application of sunscreen, will ensure that your child is protected from the sun.
Please note that the only hats that can be worn are the school wide-brimmed hats as pictured, as these offer the most protection. Caps have not been part of our school uniform since 2017. Any child without the correct hat will need to stay in the shaded playground at school during breaks.
Hats that can either be purchased from the office for or online through Argyle Uniforms on their website: www.argyleonline.co.nz/ for $13.60. Please ensure you write your child's full name clearly in their hat.
