Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou Parents / Caregivers / Sunnynook Families
Welcome back to Term 2! It seems that our tamariki have enjoyed a good break and are feeling refreshed and ready to start school again, judging by the happy, smiling faces we have seen at school.
We were delighted to welcome our new staff members, students and their families to our community with a Pōwhiri on the first day of term. All those who attended were impressed with the performance of our talented Kapa Haka group and I would like to thank Matua Darius for his enthusiasm and time that he puts in every Friday for teaching our students tikanga Māori. Thank you to Ms Roseanna Baker for organising the Pōwhiri and welcoming all those new to our school with a Karanga.
We are pleased to welcome the following new and returning staff to Sunnynook Primary:
- Mrs Katrina Hosken in her new role as Deputy Principal.
- Mrs Pravina Patel as our New Entrant teacher.
- Ms Kaitlin Hubble is returning from parental leave.
- Mr Jerram Broadley is our new caretaker.
- Ms Kelly Williams is joining our Learning Support team.
You will be aware that Tuesday, 25th April was a public holiday to commemorate the landing of ANZAC troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on the 25th April 1915. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. This is a national day of remembrance for all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. We had a moving tribute to ANZAC day at assembly on our first day back at school. Thank you to Celine from Room 21 for playing the 'Last Post' on her trumpet. It was a very heart-warming and emotional moment.
With the colder months coming up, could we please ask you to keep your child home if they are unwell, to prevent the spread of any colds or diseases to other students or teachers. We have removed the Shade Sails during the winter months of term 2 and 3, and hats are now not compulsory. With the change in weather, we would also recommend that your child brings a change of clothes in their bag. Our school uniform is compulsory and shoes should be black with dark coloured socks.
It was good to see the turnout for our recent Student Learning Conversations in Term 1. Around 80% of our parents / caregivers attended the meetings which were a good opportunity for our teachers to answer any questions you may have had about your child's learning and progression. At the end of this term, you will have a mid- year report shared with you on Hero.
Our Mufti Day at the end of Term 1 raised $401 and I would like to thank you all for your donations. The money raised goes towards extra learning resources for our tamariki.
Ngā mihi
