Welcome back to Term 2! It seems that our tamariki have enjoyed a good break and are feeling refreshed and ready to start school again, judging by the happy, smiling faces we have seen at school.
We were delighted to welcome our new staff members, students and their families to our community with a Pōwhiri on the first day of term. All those who attended were impressed with the performance of our talented Kapa Haka group and I would like to thank Matua Darius for his enthusiasm and time that he puts in every Friday for teaching our students tikanga Māori. Thank you to Ms Roseanna Baker for organising the Pōwhiri and welcoming all those new to our school with a Karanga.
We are pleased to welcome the following new and returning staff to Sunnynook Primary:
Mrs Katrina Hosken in her new role as Deputy Principal.
Mrs Pravina Patel as our New Entrant teacher.
Ms Kaitlin Hubble is returning from parental leave.
Mr Jerram Broadley is our new caretaker.
Ms Kelly Williams is joining our Learning Support team.
You will be aware that Tuesday, 25th April was a public holiday to commemorate the landing of ANZAC troops at Gallipoli in Turkey on the 25th April 1915. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. This is a national day of remembrance for all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. We had a moving tribute to ANZAC day at assembly on our first day back at school. Thank you to Celine from Room 21 for playing the 'Last Post' on her trumpet. It was a very heart-warming and emotional moment.
With the colder months coming up, could we please ask you to keep your child home if they are unwell, to prevent the spread of any colds or diseases to other students or teachers. We have removed the Shade Sails during the winter months of term 2 and 3, and hats are now not compulsory. With the change in weather, we would also recommend that your child brings a change of clothes in their bag. Our school uniform is compulsory and shoes should be black with dark coloured socks.
It was good to see the turnout for our recent Student Learning Conversations in Term 1. Around 80% of our parents / caregivers attended the meetings which were a good opportunity for our teachers to answer any questions you may have had about your child's learning and progression. At the end of this term, you will have a mid- year report shared with you on Hero.
Our Mufti Day at the end of Term 1 raised $401 and I would like to thank you all for your donations. The money raised goes towards extra learning resources for our tamariki.

Introducing Your 2023 Student Leaders
Olivia Cho and Max Ward Profiles
Olivia Cho: Kia ora Sunnynook Whanau! My name is Olivia Cho and I'm one of your amazing 2023 student leaders. I like to play several sports while representing Sunnynook school. I have 3 responsible jobs at Sunnynook and those are being a Peer Mediator, Librarian, and of course a student leader. I love Sunnynook for many reasons including the many activities, events and sports. I really look forward to being a student leader for 2023. Thank you for your time!
Max Ward: Hi, my name is Max Ward and I am one of the awesome Sunnynook Primary School Student Leaders of 2023. I have been at Sunnynook since I was 5 in Year 0. Being a student leader is a fun commitment and actually being chosen is really cool. I always loved the school and the way everything works, and now, with my group, we’ll be able to help doing stuff around the school. That includes things like making the school a better place by having some cool activities around the school like sport activities and classroom activities. I am involved with quite a few jobs around the school which include Peer Mediator, Road Patrol, Lunchroom monitor and Librarian. As a Student Leader, you should be able to be reliable, be enthusiastic, Be kind and respectful and be patient with others. I am all these things and more.
PTA Activities
Yummy Fruit Fundraiser and Next PTA Meeting
YUMMY STICKER PROMOTION Sunnynook School take part in the YUMMY Sticker promotion which rewards schools for collecting fruit stickers with the YUMMY brand on them. Last year, we were given $1541 worth of sports gear after collecting 122 full sheets of stickers!
Your child will bring home a new sticker collection sheet this week. Simply peel off any YUMMY fruit sticker (apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, plums etc) and stick it on the sheet. Each sheet holds 100 stickers. Return the sheet to reception when it is full and ask for a new sheet to complete. If you cannot fill a whole sheet, just bring back whatever you have collected – we appreciate any stickers and can combine them with other partly completed sheets.
At fortnightly school assemblies, a class is awarded the YUMMY Fruit trophy.
YUMMY fruit is available at Pak N Save, New World and some independent fruit and vegetable shops. Occasionally, Countdown will sell the YUMMY fruit too.
A collection sheet for the cut-out labels off the YUMMY fruit bags is also available at reception or you can download it from https://www.yummyfruit.co.nz/schools/ if that is what you normally buy.
If you have any queries, email us at sunnynookpta@gmail.com or ask at the school reception and we can help you out.
NEXT PTA MEETING The next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, 2 May at 7.30pm. Please come along and find out what we do on the PTA committee and how we help our school.
Dental van at Sunnynook School 1 May - 12 May The Mobile Dental Van will be visiting our school this term to examine children who are due to be seen. If you wish to discuss this further, please ring your local Dental Clinic - Forrest Hill Dental Clinic on (09) 410 7361.
Playball at Sunnynook Primary School
- is back for Term 2 2023!
Playball
Playball is a sport and movement program for children between the ages of five and nine. All of the programs are taught in a fun-filled, energetic and positive environment.
Playball programs are age specific, with each of our programs taking into account the difference in the cognitive, emotional, social and motor development of the children in each age group.
Our Playball North Harbour coaches are dedicated to providing the best learning environment for children by using physical activity as a vehicle.
Some examples of sports we focus on in schools are; Hockey, Football, Tennis, Basketball and many more! We also bring in competition and more team elements to our 5-9 year old program to prepare the children for sport in the future. Each week will be different, to build on the skills and movements learnt in previous lessons.
Classes at Sunnynook Primary School will be held on:
Mondays from 3:00-4:00 during the school term.
PLEASE NOTE: This week's class will be held TOMORROW Friday April 28th at the normal time due to the teacher only day on Monday.
Classes will be held at the covered netball courts. If a class is postponed, parents will be notified ahead of class time. Please let me know your child's classroom. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Coach Reuben on 0277674060 or reuben@playball.co.nz
Lyford Reserve Bridge Re-opened
A good start for Term 2!
The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board advised that the Council maintenance team have confirmed that the bridge by Lyford Reserve is safe for use and the barriers have been removed. This was great news for many of the community using the bridge to access school.
Westlake Music Event
On behalf of Westlake Music, I would love to invite your students and school community to attend ‘Music of the Lake’ – a concert featuring our top music ensembles from both Westlake Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools. It will be on Friday 12th May, 7:30pm, and held at the Westlake Girls High School Events Centre. This will be our first big public concert of the year, and we’re excited to present all the amazing music that our premier groups have been working on so far.
With people travelling overseas again, there’s a risk that someone with measles could unknowingly bring the disease back to Aotearoa.
Measles spreads easily and quickly, usually between people who are unimmunised or only partially immunised. It can be serious and life threatening. In the 2019 measles outbreak in Aotearoa more than 30% of the people infected had to be admitted to hospital.
The best protection against measles is the free MMR vaccine. It will protect you and your whānau, and prevent the virus from spreading.
You will be protected against measles if you:
• had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine
• had measles before
• were born before 1 Jan 1969.
If you’re unsure if you or your tamariki have had any or both doses of the MMR vaccine, check by calling your GP or hauora provider. Alternatively, check your Plunket Well Child Tamariki Ora book. If you’re still not sure, be safe and get immunised – there are no safety concerns with having an extra dose. MMR vaccines are free at your local health provider and many pharmacies.
As measles still occurs in many countries, if you’re travelling overseas these holidays it’s especially important to be immunised to prevent the risk of being unknowingly infected and causing an outbreak in Aotearoa on your return.
More information about the measles vaccination can be found here:
Please send your child's up-to-date Vaccination Certificate to: reception@sunnynookschool.nz
