Principal's Message

Tēnā koutou Parents / Caregivers /Sunnynook Families

It is with regret that we advise that Jerram Broadley, our Caretaker, has resigned from Sunnynook - his previous workplace has enticed him back! Jerram will be sadly missed and we wish him all the very best with his new role. We have appointed a new caretaker, James Matthews, to this position.

It has been fantastic to see the turnout for our recent events at school. I know that it is not always possible for parents and caregivers to attend, but whenever possible, we will make sure you have access to the information provided. Please see the latest helpful information and tips from our Maths Whānau Workshop on Hero and our school website.

I was very impressed with the speeches from our finalists in the North Shore Speech competition. All our students did so well and we are very proud of them - I am sure we have some future leaders with these inspiring and confident young people.

Our Knowledge-athon is occuring next week, and I have been delighted to see how our tamariki have been participating so enthusiastically in this. Thank you to everyone for supporting your child. We have raised around $12,777 so far. I would encourage you to look at our Display Board on the outside wall of the room between the Technology Room and Room 7.

For health and safety reasons, could I please ask that you do not send your child too early to school as we cannot provide any supervision in the playground until 8.30 am. This is also the case after school, so please make sure that your child goes directly home when the bell rings. If you do need to drop your child off early or pick them up at a later time, we are very fortunate to have sKids before and after-school care running at school. They provide some excellent activities to engage your child when they are here outside of our school hours. Please contact them directly at sunnynook@sKids.co.nz for more information.

The Sunnynook Speech Competition is a Competition where 4 people from each class get to compete using a different category, the Categories include: Flash Talk, Rap, Speech & Traditional. The theme is Kaitiakitanga which means Guardianship.

First of all, the Year 5’s & 6’s had to choose between one of the categories above.
They had to make their speech including how we can care for the land or care for the people which is what kaitiakitanga means.
After they think the speech is good enough, they practice their speech until they perfect it.
When the day has come they say their speech to their class.
If they were one of the 4 people who got in, they had to practice more with the other contenders who also got in.
When the day has come they present their speech in front of the Nga Kauri teachers and students.
Then after all the speeches, they present 3rd, 2nd and 1st of each category.

There were 24 students who got into the semi finalists but only 9 got either 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

North Shore Rehu Tai Speech Finals

Last Thursday, on behalf of the North Shore Principals Association, I ran the North Shore Rehu Tai Speech Finals. This was held in the Kristin School auditorium. I took with me 3 of our speech finalists as hosts and 2 children as the official time keepers. These children did an amazing job in an unfamiliar environment - Ka rawe Shonny Tohu-Harris, Meila Coyle and Sara Fahim for your outstanding hosting and Pena Rehrer and Jack Greenwood for your very precise timekeeping. We also had Aveyana Duncan represent our kura in Traditional Speech and Lucy Davis represent us in Rap. Aveyana spoke with confidence and had the most clarity and voice projection in the competition and had a very tough genre to compete in. Lucy Davis wowed the judges and came 1st in her genre. She will now go on to represent the North Shore in the Auckland Principals Association final later this term!
