As we reach the end of another exciting term, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we have had together. It has been a busy and fulfilling term at our school, filled with countless opportunities for teaching and learning. We are looking forward to seeing you all next week at our Matariki open morning on Tuesday 27 June 9:00-11:00am. Look out for an invite from your child.

Our teachers have worked hard to create engaging lessons, this term the children have also engaged in a range of sports activities and trips that have allowed them to showcase their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Whether it was competing on the field or exploring new places. 

We have also enjoyed seeing parents join us at assemblies this year, this week it was very entertaining with Aveyana singing solo and Daniel with his Mickey Mouse impersonation.

A big thanks to our parents and caregivers for your help over the past two terms, and to our parents who helped on Friday at our Disco, lots of fun for all, it was lovely to meet some new parents too. 

We wish you all a relaxing and rejuvenating holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the next term, filled with new learning adventures and exciting opportunities.

The Ministry of Education provided all schools with two teacher only days (also known as accord days) for 2023. These days are to support significant changes in curriculum and assessment.

They are opportunities for kaiako to share ideas and expertise, and to grow their confidence in implementing the upcoming curriculum and assessment changes.

For Sunnynook Primary, this will be held in Term 4, Week 7 on Wednesday 22nd November. This day coincides with Wairau Intermediate.

These will be held in Term 3, Week 3 on Wednesday 2nd August. Bookings will soon be made available for you on HERO. These are student lead conversations with up to four families per time slot. 

A reminder that reports will be published and made available on Thursday 29 June. The graphs will also be finalised on this date. Please remember to have notifications turned on so you are aware when these have been posted.

Banner:
In week 8 the school banner went to R16 for their amazing self portraits.
In week 9 the school banner went to R5 for the maths work they are doing on Pythagoras, workshop activities and Mitey Mophead illustrations.

Principal's Certificates:
Congratulations to the students receiving the Principal's Certificate at Assembly. These were awarded for demonstrating Thinking Skills.

Parents and Caregivers are invited to a Matariki Open Morning from 9-11am on Tuesday, 27th June.
The programme for the morning will be:

9.00am.        Join your child in their classroom
10.00am      Matariki assembly
10.30am.      Enjoy morning tea with your child
11.00am.      Morning tea ends and classes resume as normal.

On Tuesday 20th of June Room 7 and Room 21 went to Corbans Estate. First we got on the bus. When we got there we watched a story on Matariki. After that we got introduced to the materials of a poi. We started drawing patterns for our pois. When we had finished we traced into a foam board. Then we got shown how to print. Once we had got a place at the table we started to roll the rollers in the ink. Then we rolled the ink onto our foam prints. Once our foam prints were covered in ink we then dry rolled our prints onto fabric. After a delicious lunch and game of continuous tag we learnt how to braid and tie knots to make the poi tassel and string. We got our fabric and stuffed it with pillow stuffing and then tied the wool around it. That was our pois done! We ended the day with learning how to use the poi to a song called E Rere Taku Poi. I really enjoyed the day and felt happy because I learnt new things.

I have been lucky to get to a few different sports events and games over the last few weeks. I have been so impressed with the skills levels of our sportspeople and also the sportsmanship alongside seeing our Sunnynook values being enacted outside of school.

Netball: It was great to see the year 3 and 4 netball teams on a blustery Saturday morning. These students worked well as a team and were so happy on the court. 

Rippa: The 6 Rippa teams that we took gave their all for each of the 4 games that they played. We took 6 teams from yr 3-6 and our Sunnynook kids  supported one another and showed true sportsmanship when some came across teams who weren't as kind. All teams won at least 1/2 of their games with one of our Yr 5-6 teams undefeated! 

A huge thank-you to our parents and grandparent helpers: Sam Malloch, Mr Cain, Hanin Alkhafaji, Sione & Katrina Kupa, Matt Rapana and ex-Sunnynook pupil Paige Beaumont. We cannot run sport without parent helpers so we very much appreciate people taking a turn to volunteer. If you can help at the next Rippa day please contact Mrs Fritsch.

Basketball: In week 8 our two Yr 5/6 teams came up against each other. This game was a delight to watch as the teams were competitive yet truly showed our values of respect and kindness encouraging each other, helping people up if they fell down and playing the game with a smile on their faces.

I look forward to seeing more sport in the coming weeks.

A HUGE THANK YOU! Our ROCK & ROLL Disco was a huge success, thanks to all of YOU - we couldn't have done it without your help! It was awesome to see some new faces getting in amongst the action. Virginia expresses her gratitude also, on behalf of the teaching staff. Thank you (again!) to Eman and Saira for organising Halal sausages to be safely cooked and brought to disco for our students who don't eat pork or beef. 

And thanks to Kieran Fox and King Wei for manning the BBQ and cooking up the other 400 sausages for both discos! And of course Hellers for providing us with the sausages! 

A huge thank you also to the teaching staff for giving up their evening, especially those that stayed until the end of the senior disco.

A huge congratulations to the Sunnynook Primary School team for placing fourth among a group of eight very strong schools. All Students should be very proud of the way they represented our school by cheering on teammates and showing the school values in every way.

BUZZZZZ! went the starting buzzer then a loud ear piercing screech of the whistle, as we begin our day. You could feel the excitement luring in the air. As butterflies whizzed around in our stomachs. This was it. The day we had all been waiting for! On Wednesday, 21 June our Year 6/1 Netball Team went on a trip to the annual North Harbour Netball Tournament.

In our first game we lost to Albany, but pushed to our limits after a 20 minute break we were back on court versing Red Beach. It was a tough, tight game but they beat us in the end by 3 points. After all our work we had a rewarding lunch break for about an hour. And then you guessed it, we were back on court again playing Mairangi Bay successfully. We won by 10 points, putting us in third place for our grade. Our last game was close and competitive, we pushed through and won 7 - 3.

By the end of our 4 games we were exhausted but had lots of fun and plenty of sugar. We deeply appreciate having our coach Michelle Rice and our umpires Indie Coyle and Hayley Rice. Thanks to Naomi Naera and Jo Timoti who took us  to and from the venue. Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters, we couldn't have done it without you!

On Thursday 8th of June, five Rippa Rugby teams from Sunnynook went to the Super Cluster event at Windsor Park. As I lay my first foot on the icy frost covered grass, I immediately felt a pins and needles sensation  running through my foot, it was time to start an exciting day of rugby! 

Our teams were very excited to start playing.The first few games were great and most of our Sunnynook teams won! The rest of our day was such a ball hanging with your mates, loud music, fun games and warm ups in between each game. By the end of the day we were all exhausted, muddy and filled with sugar.

Our teams did so well and had so much fun! We can't thank all our coaches enough: Katrina Hosken, Sei Tereora, Samantha, Paige and all of our many more supporters, we deeply appreciate you all and we had so much fun! We can't wait  to play our next tournament in August!

Indy Naera:
Hi my name is Indy Naera and I’m a student leader of 2023. I also do sports on Thursday and peer mediation on Tuesdays. I'm kind, supportive and helpful. I started at Sunnynook School 7 years ago, you're probably wondering how you could start 7 years ago. See I never skipped year zero so I started 7 years ago. I'm happy to be at Sunnynook. It is an amazing school. I'm with my friends and living a happy life. My family is always supportive of me, same with my friends. Some of my hobbies are netball, basketball, sometimes tennis, softball and swimming. So I hope I can help and support you just like my friends and whānau.
Theo Thomas:
I love having the opportunity to be part of planning and organising things. I am a peer mediator, road patrol monitor and wet day monitor and love being a student leader. I will be working with all the other student leaders for the whole year.

I have been at Sunnynook Primary School since I was 5 years old. Those years have been the best years of my life . 

My strengths are rugby and basketball and I love math.

It has been pleasing to see more students scootering and biking to school recently. Ensuring everyone’s safety is paramount. Our school website has more information about safety tips we recommend following with forms for you to complete with your child to ensure they are aware of the safety rules and gain a license.

The main points are:

NZTA recommends children under the age of 10 years should always bike with an adult. Find more tips for bike safety here. With this in mind we advise students aged 7-9 years to bike with adult supervision.

School Hours
Our school day is structured as follows:

Late - Students who arrive after 8:50 am need to report to the office via the student entrance for their late pass before going to class. It is important that students arrive before this time to organise themselves for the day.

Absences - If your child is going to be absent from school, please inform the school office every day that your child is going to be absent by either phoning 410 6534 option 1, via the Hero app or via our website. If possible, please inform the school office before 9:00 am.

Hero App
We encourage you to use our Hero App. 
In 2023 our main form of communication with you - our school community, will be via Hero. On the Hero app, the little bell icon at the top right of your screen shows whether you have any new notifications.  At times if the post is a longer one you may need to click ‘read more’ to view the whole message. We would appreciate it if you could also use Hero to report absences.

Playball is a sport and movement program for children between the ages of five and nine. All of the programs are taught in a fun-filled, energetic and positive environment.

Playball programs are age specific, with each of our programs taking into account the difference in the cognitive, emotional, social and motor development of the children in each age group.

Our Playball North Harbour coaches are dedicated to providing the best learning environment for children by using physical activity as a vehicle.

Some examples of sports we focus on in schools are; Hockey, Football, Tennis, Basketball and many more! We also bring in competition and more team elements to our 5-8 year old program to prepare the children for sport in the future. Each week will be different, to build on the skills and movements learnt in previous lessons.

 

Classes at Sunnynook Primary School will be held on:

Mondays from 3:00-4:00 starting July 17th.

The cost for the term will be $110
